  • Appointments are necessary and should be made in advance.
  • Culturally, the Fijian people are very polite and respectful. Therefore, it is important to develop a good rapport and discuss issues thoroughly to ensure that both parties interpret each other correctly.
  • Handshake:
    A firm handshake is the standard form of greeting within business situations in Fiji.
  • Punctuality:
    Punctuality is Important in business situations, expected and appreciated.
  • Dress:
    Attire, even in formal business meetings, is considerably more relaxed than in many cultures. Suits and jackets are rarely worn, and a tie will be required in only very formal circumstances. Even then the tie should be paired with a short-sleeved shirt. In general, smart trousers with an open-necked; short-sleeved shirt is acceptable for men, while a similar style blouse with a skirt is fine for women.
  • Exchanging business card is common among professionals.
  • The exchange of gifts is not a widely accepted Fijian business practice.
  • Most business people prefer to be called by their first name, rather then using Mr. / Mrs. (surname). It is a normal practice to use titles in formal correspondence.
